A quiet corner of Norfolk is the unexpected setting for West End glitz and glamour. For nearly fifty years, Thursford has been the setting for the biggest Christmas show in the country, with a massive stage holding 60 singers, plus high-kicking dancers. Producer John Cushing spends much of the year preparing this live immersive show, using singers and dancers from London’s West End.
The result is a slick professional production which moves seamlessly from one act to the next. Compilations from classic musicals like Mary Poppins combine with foot tapping Irish dancing, acrobats, circus stars and traditional Christmas carols. Each performance attracts over 1,400 people drawn from all over the country.
The stunning auditorium, complete with a traditional carousel and unique Venetian gondola ride is proving equally popular as a wedding venue. Taking rides on the galloping horses or Venetian gondolas offers fantastic photo opportunities for the entire wedding party.
The presence of historic Victorian steam engines bears witness to the origins of this unique attraction. Thursford began as a hobby for George Cushing, a local businessman who had a passion for vintage steam. He collected steam tractors, fairground rides, fairground organs and other machinery. Now a charity with its own museum; Thursford has become one of the biggest attractions in Norfolk possessing the world’s largest collection of steam engines and organs.
Exploring Thursford is a great way to explore steam heritage and discover more about staging West End shows. Guided backstage tours sell out well in advance, with participants able to discover how the show is staged and see the cast rehearsing.
And to bring extra magic – Thursford is now also hosting an ever increasing winter lights display covering everything from African safari animals, candy town and marching guardsmen.
